It’s An Odd Idea–Hear Me Out…

If you have read many of these update posts, you may know that I have a sci-fi novel fully drafted. That is not to say my rough draft is ready for feedback, let along publishing, but it is a complete story. I have not made any progress in that particular project in a long time. I am pretty sure I am scared. So, I have an idea. Whether it is a good one or not, we shall see.

My idea is to create and post a work of fanfiction.

I believe that after publishing any work, publishing an original novel to sell will be a smaller step. Fanfiction is a good beginning point because there is a lot less pressure there. It is not professional; it is anyone writing for fun. There is no price attached. A piece of fanfiction can get lost in the massive amount of others. Furthermore, I can edit it after it is published if I miss anything.

I have been planning a story for a couple of weeks and will draft it in July, which coincides with a few community writing events. Due to the quirks of this particular medium, I could begin publishing the early chapters before the rest are done, and expand my comfort zone in a second way. I know that if I get any reviews there will be negative ones, and I have strategies ready to prevent getting discouraged by the trolls out there.

The point of this is, once that fanfiction is out there, I will have already published something. Publishing another work will not be nearly so daunting.
